Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu tour- Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco – Sacred Valley – Aguas Calientes

We are going to pick you up from your hotel at 7:00am and take you on our minivan toward the Sacred Valley of the Incas. First, we will go to Chinchero to explore it’s amazing inca ruins and the famous weaving centers where you will get to interact with the local artisans. You will get to witness up-close the traditional methods used to create the textiles that this area is famous for. You will also have the chance to purchase hand-made souvenirs.

Next, we will travel to the admirable agricultural laboratories and ruins of Moray where you will be able to explore and take pictures. After this, we will go to the salt mines of Maras. There are over 3,000 fountains which are still owned by the local families of Maras who harvest and sell the salt.

Finally the last place to visit is Ollantaytambo where you will have the chance to explore the ruins and the town. The town itself is a living Inca museum and the gateway to Machu Picchu. It is still adorned with original structures from the Inca Empire such as the remarkable channels and stone streets. Ollantaytambo was originally a strategic militant, agricultural, and religious place used to control the comings and goings of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The fortress that guarded the access to the interior part of the valley can still be seen. After our tour, we are going to catch our train to Aguas Calientes where we will be spending the night in a 3-star hotel.

DAY 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Following breakfast in the hotel, you will take the 30-minute bus ride up to Machu Picchu where you will explore with a professional tour guide. The site’s excellent preservation, the quality of its architecture, and the breathtaking mountains have made Machu Picchu one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world today. The Incas were some of the best masons in the world. The structures were so well built with a technique called ashlar (stones that are cut to fit together without mortar) that not even a knife blade can fit in between stones. Once you have completed your visit, you will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes followed by the train back to Cusco which usually arrives in the evening.

Huayna Picchu Mountain
Huayna Picchu, is a stunning mountain that sits directly behind Machu Picchu, this is the infamous sugar-loaf mountain which sits at an elevation of 2,720m and 300m above the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel.
There are some archaeological remains as the Moon Temple and other precincts that are interconnected with authentic trails, steps, tunnels and natural formatted caves which made the view more interesting, without any doubt, Huayna Picchu mountain can be the highlight of your trip to Machu Picchu.
The last stretch to get the summit is very steep, narrow, and in some parts, you are required to use your hands for balance. There are some stone ladders to climb up the cliff face along the way. if you have problems with the heights this may not be the hike for you. The summit itself is not flat but is instead rocky, therefore when the crowd picks up it can be a bit difficult to move around.

  • Difficulty – Due to the complexity and gradient of the trail, the hike is rather challenging.
  • Duration – The round trip can take between 1.5 to 2 hours in average.
  • Elevation – The mountain’s summit sits at 2,693masl, while the climb itself is 353m.

Huayna Picchu mountain can be climbed in 2 different sessions:

  • The first session: from 7am to 8am
  • The second session: from 10am to 11am

Machu Picchu Mountain
The climb up to Machu Picchu mountain is nearly twice as high as Huayna Picchu but has a more gradual ascent profile up to its summit at 1,850 feet (~620m) above the city ruins (3,051m above sea level).
The panoramic views are from another world. The Inca ruins, Huayna Picchu and Putucusi Mountains look so small behind the giant row of mountains that it makes you wonder if it is true what you are seeing. You will be astonished!
The awe-inspiring view is still composed by a bright blue sky, clouds and the Urubamba River snaking around colossal mountains covered with lush vegetation. What a gift from our mother nature!

  • Difficulty – Due to the complexity and gradient of the trail, the hike is rather challenging.
  • Duration – The round trip can take between 2.5 to 3 hours in average.
  • Elevation – The mountain’s summit sits at 3,000masl, while the climb itself is 600m.

Machu Picchu mountain can be climbed in 2 different sessions:
